Paper penguin wall art

Cakey loves penguins – hey what's not to love? We were halfway through her favourite penguin book 365 Penguins by Jean-Luc Fromental and Joelle Jolivet when she decided she wanted to make some penguins. Before we started though we looked them up on the internet and talked about what penguins look like, what they eat and where they live.

After our penguin chat I pulled out some black, white and coloured paper. We cut shapes out for the body (sort of oval), beak (sort of triangular), flippers (sort of long ellipse shapes) and feet (sort of triangular or square...we weren't too fussy). Using sticky tape Cakey stuck all the variously shaped body bits together and created a whole colony of penguins. I kept the book handy to remind us of all the 'bits' that make up a penguin. Once all the penguins were made, we stuck them together 'holding flippers' and taped them to the hall wall. Cakey then ran up and down the hall 'racing' the penguins.

This project was loads of fun and really easy too. It is fantastic for preschoolers learning about shapes and scissor practice. Now the penguins have pride of place stuck up on Cakey's bedroom wall.
